Create hosts

Storage hosts are systems that use storage system LUN resources. A logical unit number (LUN) is an identifier that is used for labeling and designating subsystems of physical or virtual storage.

Prerequisites

See Roles and associated permissions to determine the user roles that can perform this task.

The maximum number of initiators that are allowed in a host is 64.

About this task

To create hosts:

Steps

  1. Select the storage system.
  2. Select Hosts > Hosts .
  3. Click Create > Create Host.
    The Create Host dialog displays.
  4. Type a Host Name.
Host names must be unique from other hosts or host groups on the storage system and cannot exceed 64 characters. Only alphanumeric characters, underscores ( _ ), and (-) are allowed. Host names are case-insensitive.
  5. Select the Fibre radio button to filter the available hosts table to display Fibre Channel hosts only, select the iSCSI radio button to filter the table to display iSCSI hosts only, or select the NVMe/TCP radio button to filter the table to display NVMe/TCP hosts only. The Fibre radio button is selected by default.
  6. Select one or more initiators and click An icon showing a right-pointing arrow symbol to add the selected initiators to the host.
  7. Click the An icon showing a plus symbol button to the right of Initiators in Host to add an initiator. Type the Initiator name and select OK.
  8. Select a host, click An icon showing three dots arranged in a vertical row, signifying a menu with more options, and click Set Flags to open the Set Host/Host Group Flags dialog.
  9. Optional: To set the host port attributes:
    1. Click Set Host Flags .
    2. Optional: Select a host whose flag settings you want to copy.
    3. Modify any of the attributes, by selecting the corresponding Override option (resulting in the activation of the Enable option) and enable (select) or disable (clear) the flag.
    4. Optional: Select consistent LUNs to specify that LUN values for the host must be kept consistent for all volumes within each masking view of which this host is part. When set, any masking operation, involving this host that would result in inconsistent LUN values, is rejected. When not set, the storage system attempts to keep LUN values consistent but deviates from consistency if LUN conflicts occur during masking operations.
    5. Click OK .
  10. Do one of the following:
    • Click Run Now to perform the operation now.
    • Expand Run Now and click Add to Job List to add this task to the job list, from which you can schedule or run the task at your convenience. For more information, see Schedule jobs and Preview jobs.
